Following the untimely death of Matthew Harding in 1996, the Matthew Harding Memorial Cup was established in recognition of the contribution that he made to Lloyd’s Football Club. The Nexus team manager, Kevin Gotts assembled a talented squad for us to take part in this competition for the first time:
Adam Clark (captain), Callum Hodge, Dan Dibden, Stuart Yates (goalkeeper), Sam Beer, Chris Moy, Ian Selby and Paul Spinks.
Hopes were high, like England in Brazil, as we travelled to Tolworth in Surrey as opposed to Rio de Janeiro, and good results were ground out in the group stage. A 1-0 victory over Pembroke Managing Agency, courtesy of a Callum Hodge goal, the same score against London Special Risks, Ian Selby netting this time, and a Dan Dibden header earned us a 1-1 draw with THB Group.
However, despite not losing we were placed third in the group which meant that we didn’t progress any further in the competition and found ourselves playing our friends from Marketform in the plate competition. A hard fought 0-0 draw meant penalties and, yes, like England, we went down 4-3.
However, a good time was had by all and there was no Brazilian Meltdown in Belo Horizonte...so hope springs eternal for next year’s competition.
