Eleven Nexus employees and 22 broker guests descended on Cowes in the Isle of Wight to take part in the annual yachting regatta, the first time the group has taken part in this world famous event.
The whole week went smoothly with the crew staying near the West Cowes Marina. A Boot Camp regime was imposed every day with breakfast at 08.30 followed by a briefing from the skipper at 09.00 and setting sail at 10.00.
Our French yacht was chartered from Fairview Sailing, a 37 foot Oceanis class racing yacht called 'Mon Dilemme' in almost new condition that was handled pretty well given that several of the crew had never sailed before.
The skipper, Nicholas Wright, commanded the seven crew each day who looked the part kitted out in their superb Nexus sailing gear which wouldn't have been out of place on the Royal Yacht Britannia. It was very much a team building day with two members of Nexus staff and five brokers alternating during the week.
The weather by and large was kind to us. Monday to Friday was very hot and produced wind speeds averaging 12 knots during the first three days of the week which, we were assured, were very good race conditions...though not quite reflected in our consistent result positions.
On Thursday and Friday we were becalmed, but Mon Dilemme safely took us up the River Beaulie where the only dilemma we faced was to choose between visiting sites of local interest or an establishment of refreshment.
The tail of Hurricane Bertha did eventually hit us on Friday night but the only liquid impact we felt wasn't at sea but in the bar.
Alex Mobbs summarised the whole successful week:
“A great opportunity to get our guys together with brokers in a totally different world. It was a terrific way to entertain in such a special and exhilarating way and we all came back saying it was as good as being on holiday with mates! The whole week was made even better by the superb weather.”
Being a modest crew, we allowed others to claim the glory on the high seas, but for those of you who like racing form (surely a prerequisite to work in the insurance industry? Ed) the link to the results and race classes can be found here:
