The Nexus Group is now part of a prestigious set of the fastest growing private companies in the UK across all sectors.
In accountancy firm BDO’s Profit Track 100 report, which was recently published in the Sunday Times, Nexus was placed 91st in a league table ranking Britain’s private companies with the fastest-growing profits.
Commenting on the listing, Colin Thompson, Group Chief Executive Officer, Nexus Underwriting Management Limited, said,
“This is a very prestigious award and, as you look through the list, you will recognise numerous household names - we are one of two insurance organisations, the other is a broker – and this is a huge credit to all of the hard work that Nexus team deliver day in, day out, as well as confirmation that our business model continues to thrive.
The list, drawn together by comparing the compounded annual profit growth rates over the last three years for all private companies other than the small ones, shows Nexus’ profit to have grown at a rapid annual rate of 56.3% over the past three years. Furthermore, with an operating margin of 42%, we are one of the most efficiently run businesses in this league table.”

Growth has indeed continued apace here at Nexus, with our brand new office space quickly benefitting from the addition of fresh talent from across the market. We thought it would be interesting to lift up the Nexus bonnet, as it were, and ask a new joiner to the group what it’s really like in Leadenhall Street.
Proudly hailing from the Czech Republic, Petra Kolesova is an Assistant Underwriter in the Surety and Latent Defect team at EBA. She joined Nexus this January 2018 from CRL Management Limited who sold structural insurance. Her role and responsibilities are to review UK/Irish surety bonds, propose a rate and then “pray that Christina Spelman (my boss) approves them.” She also checks and approves final certificates for UK latent defect prior to issuance to ensure that all the documents are on file and the risk is acceptable from the insurer point of view.
We asked her what attracted her to join Nexus and what’s good about working here?
“To be honest I have known Christina for over three years now and ever since I met her I wanted to work with her (I am not trying to get pay rise!). I really enjoy working on surety bonds and I am learning so much from her so I knew it was the right move for me in terms of my career.
I love the office environment at Nexus, everybody is really nice and friendly. I also like the fact that you are not micromanaged and are able to give your input and be proactive without being constantly watched. We all want to do well and I like the fact that I am working in trustworthy environment. And of course, as you might expect in the London market, I certainly enjoy the social aspect!”
What of your future career at Nexus?
“I would like to learn as much as I can about surety bonds. My aim is to become senior underwriter and to assist with the development of Irish Surety bonds and then, who knows, maybe even see if we can do something in Czech Republic where I can use my language skills. I also want to do the ACII as I have already passed the CII Certificate in Insurance.”
Proof then that it’s not just the position in the league table that counts!
